Lash Tint Aftercare: What to Do (and Avoid) in 48 Hours
By Aurelia | Lash.Skin.Body | September 21, 2026
If you’re in Del Mar and you just had a tint, this is the quick checklist that keeps your color looking even and rich.
The single most important rule after a Lash Tint is simple: keep your lashes dry and oil-free for the first 24 to 48 hours. Our Lash Tint service is quick, about 20 minutes, but what you do next matters if you want that darker, more defined look to last. In Del Mar, marine layer mornings and cooler stretches often help (less sweat), but ocean salt, sun, and steam can still fade tint faster than you’d expect.
Your Lash Tint “48-hour rules”: water, steam, sweat, and hands off
Right after your tint, your goal is to avoid anything that pulls pigment out early. We generally recommend you treat the first day like a no-fuss zone around the eyes.
First 24 to 48 hours, skip: shower spray to the face, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, heavy sweating, swimming, surfing, and rubbing your eyes.
Yes, you can shower, just keep it off the lashes
Showering is fine. Keep your face out of the direct stream and avoid letting water run over your lashes. If you wash your face in the sink, use a damp cloth around the perimeter and keep your lash line as dry as you can. If your lashes accidentally get a little wet, don’t panic. Just gently blot with a clean towel and stop there.
Skip mascara at first (especially waterproof)
For the first 24 to 48 hours, hold off on mascara. Waterproof formulas tend to need oil-based removers or more rubbing, and that is exactly what makes tint fade unevenly. If you really want mascara later in the week, water-based is usually the easiest on tinted lashes.
Days 3 to 7: keep the tint even, especially in Del Mar’s sun and salt
Once you’re past that first 48-hour window, you can live normally again, but gentle habits still make a difference. Clients come in for tint because they want that “effortless” definition. The easiest way to keep it looking that way is to reduce friction and keep oils away from the lash line.
Del Mar reminder: Even when the marine layer keeps things cool, salt spray and bright sun add up. If you surf or spend time outdoors, rinse your face after and keep cleanser off the lash line until you’re home and can wash gently.
Don’t pick, scrub, or “test” the tint
It’s common to peek close-up and wonder if one side is darker. What throws things off is rubbing the lash line or wiping hard with remover. Let your lashes settle. If you do notice uneven fading after a few days, let us know. We can usually help you troubleshoot quickly.
Be smart with workouts
After 48 hours, you can get back to workouts. Still, if you know you sweat heavily, try to keep sweat from pooling at the lash line and avoid wiping the eye area with a towel mid-session. A gentle blot works better than friction.
Oil-free cleansing and makeup habits that keep Lash Tint darker longer
Tint fades fastest when oils and rubbing enter the picture. That includes skincare oils, cleansing balms, and oil-based makeup removers drifting up to the lash line. If you love a rich eye cream, keep it on the orbital bone and away from the lashes.
Daily cleanse: Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser. Wash with light pressure, then pat dry instead of rubbing.
Makeup removal: If you wear eye makeup, remove it gently and avoid tugging at the lash base. The more rubbing, the quicker the fade.
And a quick note on timing: Lash Tint is meant to be low-maintenance, not permanent. Most people see their best color in the first week. How long it lasts tends to come down to lifestyle and aftercare.
When to reach out to us (and when it’s time to re-tint)
A little day-to-day variation is normal, especially if you’re out in the sun, at the beach, or you cleanse more often. If you notice patchy fading, if one eye looks noticeably different, or you have questions about what to use around your eyes, reach out. We’d rather answer a quick message than have you accidentally strip the tint with the wrong remover.
